FAQ
The following as some common questions related to baby sign language.
Will teaching my baby sign language cause a delay in speech?
This is a very common question (hence the reason why it is in our FAQ!). Research indicates that children that have been taught baby sign language actually have an increased, early spoken vocabulary and have improved communication skills throughout childhood. Find out more about this research here and here.
What are the benefits of baby sign language?
There are many, some tangible, some not. You will create a bond with your baby due to your better understanding of your babies feelings and thoughts which would otherwise only be possible once your baby had learnt to communicate with you through speech. Early literacy, increased IQ and increased confidence will help give your baby the best possible start.
I don’t know sign language, so how can I teach it to my baby?
We recommend the book Australian Baby Hands. It takes you through the process step by step so no prior knowledge is required. It is very common for parents to learn sign language whilst teaching their baby. Just choose some simple signs and when you have your babies full attention, start to repeat the signs.
How long will it take?
There is no definitive answer to this. Start teaching your baby sign language around the age of six months. Some babies take weeks, some babies take months. Don’t get disheartened if you think progress is slow, just keep on repeating the same simple signs and enjoy the time you are spending with your baby.
Does it actually work?
